Understanding Bored Pile Foundation: When to Use It?

What is Bored Pile?

Bored pile is a deep foundation type built by drilling a hole in the ground to a defined depth, then filling it with steel reinforcement and concrete. Unlike driven piles inserted by hammering, bored piles are cast in situ.

When Is Bored Pile Recommended?

1. Dense urban areas

With minimal vibration, bored piles are safe for neighboring buildings and don't generate complaints during execution.

2. Heavy structural loads

For high-rise buildings, bridges, or heavy-load plants, large-diameter bored piles deliver high bearing capacity.

3. Deep hard layers

Bored piles can penetrate ground layers conventional driven piles cannot.

Bored Pile vs Driven Pile

Aspect Bored Pile Driven Pile
Vibration Minimal High
Noise Low High
Dimension flexibility High Factory standard
Quality control Per pile Pre-cast
Cost per pile Higher More economical

Workflow

  1. Setting out — measuring and marking pile points
  2. Drilling — drilling to design depth
  3. Cleaning — base cleaning
  4. Reinforcement installation — placing the rebar cage
  5. Concrete pouring — pouring via tremie pipe
  6. Quality test — PIT or PDA for integrity testing

Tips to Choose a Contractor

  • Verify valid SBU and SKK Construction certificates
  • Check portfolio of similar projects
  • Ask about quality control practices
  • Ensure a workmanship guarantee
  • Compare at least 3 detailed BoQ-based quotes
